Bboy Icey Ives came down to Edmonton to share some breaking wisdom. He shared his creative process and the ways he overcame mental blocks when developing his craft to his level. Two things stood out for me in his workshop: finding our pocket and M.E.B.T.R.I.L.L.
Finding our “Pocket” : The concept of finding our pocket, is the ability for dancers and creatives to hone in on what makes us unique. This involves intentional and purposeful movements that are in-line with one’s style.
M.E.B.T.R.I.L.L: An acronym to help us remember important concepts to take into account when battling and freestyling.
- M: Musicality – Explore different genres of music to unlock different expressive personas
- E: Eras – Explore different musical eras to give you historical context
- B: Breathing – Remember to breathe like a boxer
- T: Traveling – Utilize your space
- R: Range – Explore short and wide ranges when moving
- I: Intensity – Explore high intensity and low intensity movements
- L: Levels – Explore the utilization of 3D space
- L: Lineage – Know where you came from (Crew-wise) and how you can apply things of your lineage to your craft
